February 2011 Battle for Texas
Hey everybody,
The Bronze Hammer was tossing out some ideas the other week and we thought that Grim Sword hosting a single day fight event for all Texans would be fun (and other states, too, I've had contact with a Louisiana group that has shown some interest). Basically, we were thinking we would invite people out for a single day event/fight day on a Saturday in February (possibly the 26th). Sabbathious said he'd grill for people and that we'd charge $5 total for the food/event. We'd be holding it at our usual place (Bartoholomew Park) and we'd also possibly be running a tournament with some prizes up for grabs for the winner and runners-up.
What do you guys think? Sound like fun? Anyone willing to help out?

I'm game. Count me in. It sounds like a hole lot of fun. Spread the word everyone, and post a reply so that we can get a general idea of how many people will show. We don't want to run out of food.
Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
Get a concrete date so I can request off, and the sooner we start announing this nationally the better turn out we will have. I will bring several cases of water for sure and will volenteer for weapons check and some heralding. Depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks I may make a PD weapon for a tournament prize, and I am sure that Milo will do the same.
This could do good things for our numbers, I think it will be important to enforce garb rules for this as well.
Are we looking to maybe fighting in a different area incase we get a large enough turnout?
Izec, you get my PM about the foam?

We should make it relatively early so that the people driving 4+ hours are getting their time's wrth in fighting. Something like 11. Also, as soon as we have all the details, post something on the national boards.

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
The 26th is the official date as of last weekend. We'll probably be getting started at around 10 am, I figure, with some ditching/pick up skirmishing. My rough plans are to have a full on official battle with 2 sides (we may need to move where we have the big battle to the other side of the creek, but that shouldn't be a big deal), a bridge battle on the nifty metal bridge (no projectiles), and a tournament with prizes (thanks Cas and Milo for volunteering to make prizes. I'll be making some prizes, too, and I will get with you guys later concerning what you're willing to provide). More details will be forthcoming as the date gets closer. In between all that ditching is encouraged. The food is Sabbat's arena, so I'm not sure when he wanted to have that ready, but we'll hammer all that out.

What are we doing for event tags? You making a post on the national boards?

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
I hadn't thought about event tags. Hmmm...I don't expect a large turnout (hopefully a few dozen), so I'm not sure which direction to go with it. I'll have to give that some thought.
Regarding posting on the national boards, the thread is here:

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
The day event Milo and I went to the other weekend had 25-30 at peak, just to give you an idea of what the turnout can be like.

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
i'm thinking of making a PDed dagger/shorty sword as a prize...does grimsword have an "official" symbol, or should i go with the skull & horns...?

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
The sword with the skull and horns is about the only artwork I've ever set up for Grim Sword, so it pretty much is the only official symbol. If you're making a PD crossguard like that, I'm sure it'll be awesome! You're going to have to adjust the horns to make them safe and legal, but I'm sure it'll be spiffy.
I'm currently working on my first PD weapon, so, depending on how that goes I'll probably make a 30-36" oval tech blue as a prize, all prettied up with PD. I was also planning on making a medium round shield with a painted cover that has the Grim Sword text (maybe the sword painted on, too) with more text regarding the 2011 Battle for Texas.
Casimir, any ideas on what you'd be willing to donate as a tourney prize? If you want to make another blue that'd be cool, or something else.
Hey Milo, I'm going to shoot you a PM asking you a couple of questions about PD.

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
"The Battle For Texas" isn't kick ass enough for you? C'mon, this isn't some northern yankee battle...this is the BATTLE FOR TEXAS. Your side wins this battle, you've got bragging rights. FOR ALL OF TEXAS. 2nd biggest state in the union? Most awesome place in the northern hemisphere?
Still not good enough for you? Okay, well, then then by all means I am willing to change the name of the event, provided the name is cool enough. Everybody, make some suggestions! What should our Texas event be called? Go, minions, go!

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
Izec, I snagged some steel and brass tags to use for event tags. Want me to give them to you when they come in so that you get something engraved on them to hand out to our attendees?
I bet an etching of Texas with an 11 in it would be a good logo for them. What do you think?

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
The sounds interesting, but I'm not sure how/where I could get them engraved, or even how much that would cost. I'd still like to see them, though.
Regarding the tags I was thinking of, I seem to recall that Tandy had some leather cutouts in the shape of Texas, and that I could just stamp some text and maybe a design on them. I was going to check on that.

Re: February 2011 Battle for Texas
The Texas leather cutouts would probably be a lot easier, and then I could hang on to these for something else. Your call.

*nonsense that was deleted*
Seeing those tags make me wish I could go!
But looks like it will be around May or June before I can come play in your reindeer games!
